SHRINE OF THE VIRGIN OF THE POOR IN MYSORE

The Devotion to the Virgin of the poor in Mysore was started by late Most Rev. Dr. Rene Feuga, the first Bishop of Mysore, in the year 1955.  It was in the context of Our Lady’s apparition to Mariette Beco at Banneux in France from 15th January to 2nd March in the year 1933.  The late Bishop Feuga brought the Holy Water from Banneux & mixed it with the water in the existing pond which later became a well of Holy water which the pilgrims use with great devotion.

Thus the devotion to the Virgin of the poor grew in Mysore giving birth to a shrine. The shrine was erected in 1960 in honour of our lady of the poor.  Ever since its inception numerous Pilgrims have been coming from everywhere especially on Saturdays offering prayers, candles, flowers and sarees. Large number of devotees irrespective of their culture, caste, language and status have been visiting the Shrine and have been receiving innumerable favours from Our Lady of the poor.  People suffering from Physical ailments, diseases, depression, facing serious problems in life, loss of jobs and other problems petition to Mother Mary and have been obtaining favours from her.  People who are having family problems or those who have been suffering from serious diseases have been healed miraculously.

The Shrine of the Virgin of the Poor which was built in 1960 was renovated & extended by the Parish Priests over the years.  But a full fledged new Shrine was the requirement of the pilgrims.  This need has been fulfilled, thanks to the generosity of M/S. J. Susai Raj & Associates. The shrine has been rebuilt.  It was blessed & inaugurated by Dr. Thomas A. Vazhapilly, Bishop of Mysore on 28-05-2011 on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Shrine, dedicated to the Virgin of the poor.

While the devotees are grateful to the kindness & generosity of Susai Raj, they fondly remember the late Most Rev. Dr. Rene Feuga, who started the devotion to the Virgin of the poor and Most Rev. Dr. Mathias Fernandez who built the church in her honour.

We pray that our Lady of the poor may bless abundantly all the devotees, granting them heavenly graces & bringing them close to her Son, Jesus, the Saviour of the world. We are grateful to all those who have contributed to the spread of the devotion of Mother Mary at this Shrine, especially the former Bishops, present Bishop Most Rev. Dr. A. William and all the Parish Priests.

You may kindly seize the opportunity to visit the historic and cultural city of Mysore and do not forget to visit the most popular Mother Mary’s Shrine of Mysore, located in the city on Mysore – Bangalore Highway.
